CHVRCHES is a synth pop band from Glasgow, Scotland. The band name is pronounced simply as “Churches,” and they decided to use a stylized spelling for ease of internet searching, etc. The band members are Lauren Mayberry (lead and backing vocals, synthesizers, samplers), Iain Cook (synthesizers, guitar, bass, backing vocals) and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, samplers, lead and backing vocals). At the time of this concert, CHVRCHES had released two albums – The Bones of What You Believe (in 2013) and Every Open Eye (in 2015).
My first exposure to the music of CHVRCHES was the week that their first album was released in September 2013, as I noticed it as a new release. Like many, the first song that I heard was “The Mother We Share,” and then I bought the album. It is always fun and interesting to discover a band near their “ground floor” beginning, and watch them grow both musically and artistically. For example, I’ve seen many of their concerts online, and there was a tremendous growth in their stage presence between the tours for the first album and the second album.
