Coat of arms for County Meath, Ireland County Meath, Ireland - County Meath is known as the "Royal County" as it was the seat of ancient high kings of Ireland. Photographs from two of the major historical sites are shown below. The first is the Hill of Tara, which was a sacral site associated with kingship rituals. The second is from Brú na Bóinne, which contains a number of prehistoric sites that predate the Egyptian pyramids. One of them is Newgrange, which is a passage tomb that was built over 5000 years ago. The inner chamber is illuminated by the sun on the solstice. County Meath is the county directly Northeast of County Dublin and the city of Dublin. Most of these attractions are easily accessible from Dublin via a variety of bus services or bus tours.
